1988 Georgetown Gemini Juveniles

TEAM – HOCKEY – INDUCTED IN 2018

The Georgetown Gemini Juveniles – the only Georgetown team to win an Ontario Minor Hockey Association championship and North American Silver Stick title in the same season – were masters of the comeback, on and off the ice.

At the regional Silver Stick qualifier, Georgetown finished second in its division. Only division winners advanced, but team manager Barb Hanman appealed, saying Georgetown had a better record than other division winners. Silver Stick organizers agreed, allowing the Gemini to advance to the final stage.

There Georgetown lost its opener 5-3 to Beamsville before rallying from a 4-1 deficit to beat Ajax 6-5. The Gemini topped Grimsby 5-2 to set up a rematch with Beamsville in the final. Georgetown scored six unanswered goals, two each by Terry Dixon and Rory Kennedy, to win 7-2 and claim the championship.

Three months later, Georgetown rolled through the OMHA playoffs, going 11-1. The Gemini swept Streetsville and capped a four-game semifinal victory over Kingston with a John Lantz shutout and a Kennedy hat trick in a 5-0 victory.

Georgetown swept Grimsby in the OMHA final, though it was much tougher than it looked.

In the opener, Georgetown trailed 6-4 with eight minutes left. The Gemini scored three times in 2:40 to take the lead. Grimsby tied the game, but Kennedy scored twice in overtime to give Georgetown a 9-7 win.

Kennedy again netted the winner with seven minutes left in a 3-2 win and Georgetown scored three unanswered third-period goals to win 4-2 in Game 3.

In the clinching game, Georgetown trailed 4-2, but scored twice in the final 62 seconds of the second period. It scored 10 seconds into the third and another two minutes later on its way to an 8-5 win, led by Dixon, who had his second four-goal game of the series.
